Why do we sometimes choose to wear masks?

After all, being someone other than who we really are can be quite difficult,
misleading, and at times even confusing.

The most likely culprit is fear

-fear of getting hurt or laughed at, fear of being excluded or not fitting in, fear of being exposed or analyzed, fear of being known or social anxiety, or any other layer of fear that we wish to cover up and hide.

Unfortunately, by doing so, we confuse others and ourselves, and even worse, diminish our potential in life.

The question of who am I to myself as compared to who am I to others is an important one to consider,
for this is the measure of my authenticity.

If I see myself one way, but act in another, no longer is there a line that defines my morals and beliefs, thereby my integrity falters and my character starts to diminish.

In addition, acting contrary to my inner-self grinds away the peace in my heart creating anger, stress, unhappiness, strife, and many other unhealthy feelings and emotions.

It is important to note, however, that authenticity is not equivalent to transparency –
being genuine does not require me to expose all of my raw thoughts, emotions, feelings, desires, and so forth to the whole of the world, at every given opportunity.

It simply means that I wear the same face, and communicate from the heart, regardless of the situation or people with whom I am speaking.

The most valuable gift we have to offer to this world is ourselves.

So ask yourself, “Who am I?

Am I the person who helps someone in need, the person who listens to a child who is hurt, the person who laughs with friends and family, the person who talks tenderly to their spouse and children… or the person who is frustrated in traffic, the person who yells at their spouse and children?”

If we are going to be true, we must be true to ourselves first, and then to others in our lives.

And in order for us to do this there must be congruence between the face we put on for ourselves and the face we put on for others.

RIGHT OR PEACE ?

Most of us would answer : I choose Peace.

But are you now truly able to choose peace when your emotions are running hot,

or when your “stories” are activated and brought to life by a strangers momentary actions,

or by a loved ones harsh words?

Crazy as it sounds peace is a state that is cultivated, learned and acquired.

It’s the chaos in your life that holds the potential for peace,

but you need to learn how to use chaos as your informational tool.

In our noisy world, we often find ourselves longing for peace and searching to find it somewhere else.

While it’s true that there are places we can visit where we can experience peace, such as sacred sites or buildings, we do not need to wait until we get to one of these places to feel at peace.

Instead, you can now learn to locate the seed of peace inside yourselves and cultivate it so that it grows into a reliable source of serenity that you can always access, no matter where you are and with whom you are.

We experience peace when we are in a state of mental calm and serenity.

It might surprise you to notice how infrequently you allow yourself to be free from anxiety.

Realizing this is the first step to inner peace.

If you wait until all the details of your life are taken care of to allow yourself to experience peace, you will never feel peaceful because there is always something that your mind can grab onto to create anxiety.

It is important to consciously set aside your worries and make time to cultivate inner peace.

Ideally, you could schedule time each day to meditate on peace and experience what it feels like to be calm and serene.

It takes practice to learn how to let go of your worries, so give yourself some time.

Inhale deeply, and feel your worries dissolve with every exhale.

Remind yourself that soon enough you will be able to take care of everything you need to, but right now you are taking a break.

As the clutter of your thoughts and concerns clear away, you will start to feel more serene.

Allow yourself to move deeper into this state with each inhale.

Realize that you have the power to free yourself from anxiety simply by deciding to do so.

The more you practice feeling peaceful, the easier it will be for you to feel at peace.
